Atkins Diet

To follow the diet you completely reduce most of your carbohydrate intake but you can eat as much fat and protein as you desire while still losing weight. Almost all carbohydrates are removed form the diet once you start the Atkins Diet and this induces a state called ketosis where the body is fooled into thinking that it is starving. Due to the low amount of carbohydrates in the Atkins diet the body starts to burn glycogen as opposed to its preferred source of energy glucose.

The body stores three times as water as glycogen so as this is burnt during the induction process, there is a large initial loss of water and therefore weight. The initial large weight loss is one of the main reasons why the Atkins Diet is so popular.
